Careers Speed Dating
On 5th November the Year 9 pupils at Oriel High School in Crawley were joined by Maddy Mills of the Education and Business Partnership for West Sussex and 30 local Employers, including Lisa Jarvis, owner of Permanent Solutions Direct for a fun and interesting way to find out about careers.
“The event was a great success and everyone involved agreed that the year 9 pupils did Oriel proud with their behaviour and conduct. From our perspective it was an excellent way to network with other local businesses, and to help young people learn more about the career options available to them when they leave school in an interactive way which was far more enjoyable than any careers lecture I received at school!” Lisa Jarvis, Permanent Solutions Direct
Here’s what the Year 9 pupils thought of the event:
“Year 9 had the chance to meet and interview lots of different employers about their jobs. It’s very similar to speed dating. You have to meet and employer and try and guess their job then they tell you about their work. After 10 minutes you have to change to the next person.
I met some very interesting people. One was a man who is an electrical designer. He designs machines that help cure cancer and they are then sold to various hospitals around the world. He also has to travel to the hospitals to find out the exact type of machine they need.
Another person I met was a young lady who advertises on the radio. She organises event for various radio stations and advises her clients which is the best radio station for them to sponsor or advertise on. The stations she works with most are Heart and Capital FM. I found this really interesting.
I think the electrical designer was most interesting as he helps cure something that kills rapidly.”
Rochelle
“I met loads of interesting people and was taught about tax, human resources, marketing and hospitality. There are loads more jobs than I ever thought there were and it was very interesting. I enjoyed it a lot and I would do it again”
Michael
“We sat in groups and volunteers from the community came and sat with us. It was our job to guess what their job was by asking them questions. Although I didn’t get any right, I learnt that there are lots of career options I hadn’t considered and it made me think in more depth about who I am going to be”
Coral

“I really enjoyed getting to meet employers and getting to know about their jobs. Most of the employers I met really enjoyed their jobs. I liked asking them questions. It was hard to guess what their jobs were. It made me think about what I’m going to be when I’m older”
Evangelen
“It was interesting listening to how people climb their way up to get to the profession they want after doing jobs they night not necessarily want to do. Our group met people with jobs from property to working in a vitamin company. It was a great way to find out about different jobs.”
Hollie
“On Thursday 5th November we went into the hall and talked to people about their amazing careers. I really enjoyed asking questions and exploring the world of adulthood. I really enjoyed meeting the business manager who was in charge of manufacturing new products for the world.”
